Erik Jørgensen and Snøhetta present Casework Highback, a sofa with extended armrests and high back. The sofa is part of the Casework collection, in which all the furniture is adaptable, sustainable and minimalist in style.
Created by Erik Jørgensen and the Norwegian architecture and design brand Snøhetta, the Casework collection is designed to be customisable. Together, Erik Jørgensen and Snøhetta have designed a range of furniture inspired by the way in which casework furniture is created for various rooms, the priority being to tailor the furniture to fulfill its purpose and fit into its setting.
The first design in the Casework collection was presented at Stockholm’s Furniture and Light Fair in February 2020. 3 Days of Design 2020 will see the launch of the complete collection, featuring the original Casework sofa in different sizes, the lounge chair and the highback sofa.
The Casework Highback is perfect for public settings or open office environments, in which people need calm and contemplation without the distraction of everything going on around them. In the Highback, the original Casework sofa has extended its back and side panels, thereby creating a small private space. Like the rest of the Casework collection, the Highback also features wood that extends beautifully from the legs along the sides and over the back. The long and slender surfaces make a great palette for the grain of the wood, a real hallmark of this furniture.
The new lounge chair features elegant artisanal details and beautiful notches in the wood, and like the rest of the collection, the Lounge Chair is all about sustainability and adaptivity. The Lounge Chair features wood, cushions filled with natural fibre and finally covered in wool, linen or other natural materials, just like the rest of the collection. The Casework collection has both a hardness and a softness to its expression. The solid wooden frame embraces the soft cushions, creating a wonderful tactile experience.
Its elegant, yet sturdy appearance means the Casework Lounge Chair looks great by itself or as part of a larger setup.
The sofa is produced at the Erik Jørgensen factory in the small Danish town of Svendborg on the island of Funen. Over the years, countless design classics have been created here, always in an honest, high-quality production process. ERIK JØRGENSEN X SNØHETTA’s ‘Casework’ is no exception. Consummate craftsmanship and honest materials guarantee that the furniture will last a lifetime.
To make production easier, the sofa’s frame structure can be prefabricated, and the customised panels can be fitted quickly, as and when needed, at the factory in Svendborg. Adjustable feet make it easy to compensate for uneven floors in the room for which the sofa is intended. The side and back panels are easily fitted in the production process to expedite delivery time. This also enables architects and designers to choose from an extensive range of fabrics and finishes to accommodate their requirements.
The Danish and Norwegian design practices worked on their first project back in 2017, together with Wallpaper* Handmade creating ‘Portal’ – a design that merged artistic vision with traditional furniture craftsmanship. This time, the result of the collaboration is less of an art installation and more an actual item of furniture. Now the Erik Jørgensen x Snøhetta vision and craftsmanship can become a feature in both homes and offices.
